A rediscovery of instruments through scientific analyses

Following the Andrea Amati project and the remarkable results of studies of the polychromatic decorations on his instruments, the Stradivarius Foundation is promoting a new three-year project consistent with the research work of the previous years.
Continuity in the methods of investigation will be maintained, in the belief that exhibitions of historic instruments should yield fresh insights. The coming years will thus be an opportunity to study the instruments and develop the investigation techniques used in the previous years.
But what should we examine in the instruments constructed in Cremona between 1730 and the late 19th century?
Is the construction method, the Amati method that represents the DNA of Cremonese stringed-instrument making and constitutes the knowledge-bank of the city's workshops, to be found in the instruments of Storioni, of Rota and of Ceruti?
And what about the varnishes?
The extraordinary Cremonese varnish.
What happens when know-how is no longer handed down and a technique that had been passed on for centuries becomes a secret?
The quest for answers to the numerous questions will be conducted by a group of experts, applying scientific methods and building on the experience gained during the last three years.
