New studies…new discoveries
by Paolo Bodini - President of the Foundation Antonio Stradivarius – The Triennial

Having completed both the successful “Amati 500” project, which has kept us very busy over the last 3 years since 2005 (the 500th anniversary of the birth of the first great Cremonese violin maker), and the transformation of our Triennial Board into the Antonio Stradivarius Foundation, we can now begin to look forward.
You will find the first signs of renovation in our journal, which sports a fresher and more captivating look, in line with the new logo of the Foundation.
We will do our utmost to ensure that this improved readability is accompanied by interesting content that continues to stimulate the violin making world.
We are also beginning a new 3-year project, entitled “Stradivarius… and beyond.” Starting with this year’s wonderful exhibition, described elsewhere in this journal, we will dedicate the coming year to Carlo Bergonzi, a great violinmaker who deserves wider recognition. Bergonzi was also the founder of a family of violinmakers, the most important of whom was his son Michel Angelo.
We shall then conclude the year with an in-depth study of the final period of the classical Cremonese school of the 1800s, which still saw some important masters at work. As in the past, this project will not just focus o n typical aspects of violin making, but will include scientific studies of the instruments as well as economic and historical studies. We shall seek a full understanding of what happened in Cremona during those centuries, what brought the new violin making landscape of the 1800s into being, and how it spread throughout Italy and Europe.
